Poetry Test Tomorrow

This is mostly for first period, but it applies to all five of my classes… I wasn’t sure when we would be able to do our poetry test because I wanted to do an online review first, but since the network is too overloaded with science testing right now, we need to stay off the computers. So our test will be tomorrow, and we will save the Kahoot review for the end of the year.

The poetry test is in two parts and may continue on Friday.

  • 50 poems to identify (In some cases the title and/or author will give it away… In others, you will need to check the rhyme scheme and count the number of lines. With a few, you will need to read them closely and consider the topics and content.)
  • 25 questions about poetry, stanzas, rhyme, rhyme scheme, ballads, free verse, lyric poems, haiku, etc.

This is not an easy test. If you think you can get an A+ without reviewing, you are probably mistaken… So please study!

As we approach the end of the year…

Hello! We have six weeks of school left…

The last week is full of graduation practice, picking up caps and gowns, signing yearbooks, and other tasks. So that leaves five weeks of instruction. The second-to-the-last week is when eighth graders review for finals and take their finals… So that leaves four weeks of instruction.

This means we have four weeks to do the following in English:

  • Read one more book!
    • Periods 1-3:  The Diary of Anne Frank
    • Periods 5-6:  Reading Groups: All Quiet on the Western Front and Fever: 1793 and possibly Homecoming…
  • Finish poetry projects (due April 30)
  • Perform one more small speech for the class (show-n-tell!)
  • Wrap up DOL, lit logs, etc.

Please keep up the good behavior and work hard. You will have a nice summer break soon. 🙂

Week of April 9, 2018

Hello! Welcome back from spring break! I hope you all had a fun and relaxing time (with a few chores or projects sprinkled in just so you could feel productive, too). My garage is neat and organized, my back yard has been tamed, and my dog Bruno got a lot of exercise as I did everything I could to wear him out! I only came to school once, but I got so much done, that it was just perfect.

I have updated Aeries so everyone’s grades are quite current. Between being gone for Aca Dec and a week of testing and then spring break, it looks like I haven’t been working, but I promise that I was grading papers and lit logs and not being lazy. 🙂

We have another couple of days of testing this week, as there are two English tests. We did the CAT test before break and we’re doing the Performance Task this week. A Performance Task is a nice way of saying the students need to do a lot of writing.

Because of testing, there hasn’t been much homework, but we are doing a poetry project that will be due at the end of this month. Please work on it as you have a chance and don’t save it all to the end!

Have a good week!

Last Day to Submit Poem to Contest

Today is the last day to submit one or two poems to the OJHS Poetry Anthology and Contest. Send your poems to amcconnell@ojusd.org

When the anthology comes out in April, I will be giving EXTRA CREDIT to each of you who submit a poem (10 points per poem). Please do not submit more than two, as that is the maximum allowed for this contest.

Please make sure you are submitting original work. Do not plagiarize someone else’s writing. (It’s okay to be inspired by another poem and to start off with the same phrase such as “This is just to say,” but beyond that, you need to use your own words and ideas.)

Hello! Remember, I will be gone on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for Aca Dec. Please get good sub notes! No Renaissance cards will be accepted this week (and whenever I have a sub).

Here’s the homework for the week, Periods 1-3:

  • Monday-write a 12-line poem (apology or otherwise)
  • Tuesday-reading slip
  • Wednesday-write a 16-line poem (“I do not understand” or otherwise)
  • Thursday-reading slip

And the homework for periods 5-6:

  • Monday-write a 12-line poem (apology or otherwise)
  • Tuesday-reading slip
  • Wednesday-write a 16-line poem (“I do not understand” or otherwise) and finish the “Monster” Poetry Packet

Next week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we will be doing our state testing. Please try really, really hard to be here so you don’t have to deal with make-ups on Thursday, the day before spring break.
